Running for IET Connect

Marathon completed - checking the medal is real!

When we secured a place in the 2014 Virgin Media London Marathon a search began for an IET member who would support us and wanted to run the marathon. A chance meeting at the IET Communities Committee UK conference led us to Dimitris.

Dimitris Loumanis works for Atkins, is Vice Chair of the Central London Network and is an IET Mentor.

With a target of £1,000 and 4 hours, the fundraising and training started.

Spotting friends in the crowd

Support came from all over the IET with donations from members, staff and volunteers.

The IET Central London event on the 9th April was the turning point with the donations, smashing the target by raising £1,152 in one night. The total so far is just over £2,300 but if you would like this to increase you can still make a donation on Dimitris' JustGiving page.

On a warm but breezy, 13th April, Dimitris put on his running shoes and joined the other 30,000 plus runners leaving Greenwich park.

Whilst some runners sped along ahead Dimitris kept a steady pace and 3 hours, 57 minutes and 52 seconds later he crossed the finished line, completing the 26.2 mile course under his target time of four hours.

It felt great – finishing the course was a huge relief as you can never be sure how it will go on the day. It also felt great to raise more than 200 per cent of the original target for donations and finish under my target time.

I wanted to help raise awareness of IET Connect and the great job they’re doing helping hundreds of IET members and their families in need. The donation page will remain open for some time, so please continue to donate to a worthwhile cause!

The IET Local Network in Central London and Atkins – the company I work for – have been big supporters of this fundraising campaign. Members and non-members alike have embraced our efforts, contributed towards it, and supported me throughout the race. The real stars are the people who work at IET Connect who do their utmost to help those in need.”
