“It must seem like a small thing. Most people have at least one at home these days. But to my husband Derek, getting a grant to replace our broken computer made such a difference to his wellbeing. Using the internet is one of the few things he can really enjoy doing.
Derek used to work in the electronics industry but he has not been able to for around 20 years now because of physical and mental health problems. Then in May 2011 he was diagnosed with cancer, which was a terrible shock.
He’s always kept up his IET membership and so we’d heard about IET Connect. I called up to see if they could help us with the cost of transport to hospital for Derek’s treatment as it was such a long way.
Not only did they arrange a grant for that, but they were able to pay for a new computer and two short holidays. They meant so much to us. To have a rest, a change of scenery, and to be able to spend some time together without any responsibilities, was wonderful. We went to Bridlington the first time and then to Scarborough, which is particularly special to us as we had our honeymoon there.
Someone who understands
With IET Connect, it’s not just about filing in forms for finance. I know I can always phone Cathie if I need some information or support. Feeling that you’re not on your own, that there’s someone you can talk to who understands your situation, it’s just as important as the financial help, perhaps more so.
Asking for help can be a barrier that’s difficult to get over. But I’d encourage anyone not to be embarrassed and to get in touch with IET Connect. They’re very willing to support people in difficult situations. You might find when you phone that you’re eligible for a lot more than you expect. They can make a real difference to your life – they’re wonderful.
When you don’t know what the future holds, you try and make the best of being together. Thanks to IET Connect, Derek and I have been able to do that.”
