Claire, IET Connect Caseworker

Claire is one of IET Connect's three Caseworkers. She provides support and advice to the IET members and their families who contact us.

As a Caseworker, my role is to support and advise those who contact IET Connect. Everyone who contacts us is different; it’s our job to put you at ease and work out what we can do to support you. It doesn’t matter how big or small your concerns are, we are here to help.

"We often get calls from carers who have never spoken about the challenges they face while caring for someone. Making that first call can take some courage; our role on this first contact is to find out about your situation and identify the ways we can help. The most important thing we do on this call is to listen.

Some people contact us with a very specific request and others just know they need support but aren’t sure what we can do to help. We talk through your situation and work out what kind of support we are able to offer you. What we offer differs from person to person as all our assistance is fitted to suit the needs of the person we’re talking to. The support could be a grant to help with a one-off item, regular support to help with the cost of a carer, legal advice, benefits advice, help to return to work or a combination.

We have lots of information to hand on specialist services. We can help you to access support and funds to make life a little easier; whether it's accessing other services, paying for care, home adaptations, equipment, or just taking a break.

We are contacted by lots of carers; many of them have never spoken to anyone about the impact caring for someone has on them. Many of the carers we speak to devote so much of their time and energy to the person they look after that they find it difficult to have any time for themselves or to look after their own needs. We do what we can to make things a bit easier; sometimes it can be something as simple yet essential as helping them have break for a couple of hours a week from the person they care for. Getting some extra support not only helps the person they care for but can help to reduce the stress and anxiety that the carer feels too.

One of the best things about my job is noticing the difference we make. The changes from the first phone call can be huge and it’s a privilege to play a part in helping someone through difficult life events."

IET Connect doesn’t just think about money, they’re really in tune with people’s emotional needs.
They’re more like family.

When I first heard the words ‘cerebral palsy’, it didn’t sink in. I didn’t even know what it was. Our son, Thomas was just 20 days old at the time. He’s three now, and the cerebral palsy means he can’t sit, stand or walk independently.

It was really straightforward to apply to IET Connect. It was so refreshing to talk to someone who got what we were striving for and wanted to achieve. I don't know where we’d be without IET Connect – we’d definitely be struggling.

"Jeff and I were having such fun, doing things together after we’d retired. But when he had two strokes, our lives were turned upside down. I felt isolated, alone and like no one understood. Without IET Connect, I could have tipped over the edge.

One day, I was sorting through Jeff’s things when I found his IET membership card and a leaflet about IET Connect. Plucking up the courage to call them was a turning point. The lady on the helpline listened and said she thought they could help us. I was stunned because I didn’t know anything about IET Connect."
